Information and Communication Technologies are powerful instruments to support education for all children in all countries. Thus ICT is also supporting the SDGs and the UN CRPD when it comes to the availability and accessibility of quality education and training that is affordable even in remote areas and in low-income countries. In this side-event, experts in this field present and discuss existing technologies and their potential for the future, like internet access, online tools, manuals and training, smartphone applications, digital databases and a lot more.
The Theme of 9th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD, 14-16 June 2016 is “Implementing the 2030 development agenda for all persons with disabilities: Leaving no one behind”, with one of its three subthemes: “Enhancing accessibility to information and technology and inclusive development”. ICT is one of the main drivers of accessible and inclusive education. Arguably this is even truer for low income and rural areas, where in many instances public spending on education is low and new technologies enable access to education for persons with disabilities.
In this Side Event new technologies that have the potential to improve access to education, and information in general, significantly in the near future are discussed.
