It is strongly recommended that you buy an additional insurance which will cover for all medical treatment and ambulance services including repatriation before travelling abroad. Especially if you should require air ambulance services, it is essential that you know the limit and validity of your insurance policy. The Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, however, does not take any responsibility for the quality of the insurance companies and air ambulances listed as an example on this page.
Please check carefully with your insurance company if there are any exclusion grounds due to pre-existing medical conditions. In case you are planning to exercise a risky hobby such as parachuting, paragliding, bungee jumping, cave walks etc. make sure that these sports are included by the insurance cover. Medical treatment - for example in the USA - may result in enormous costs for which the Republic of Austria can not assume any liability. Even countries, which have a social security agreement with Austria, do not transfer patients to an Austrian hospital.
A certain level of travel insurance protection may be provided by credit cards and other membership cards such as the “ÖAMTC-Schutzbrief” and the “ARBÖ-Sicherheitspass”, which are issued by the motorists’ clubs. It is necessary to check the scope of services provided by such insurance policies before travelling abroad. It is also recommended to carefully read the general and specific conditions of the insuring company (AGB-Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen).
