Commercial sexual abuse of children (girls and boys up to the age of 18 years) by prostitution, pornography and human trafficking is a gross violation of human rights and a serious criminal offence. Millions of children around the world are victims of this crime that causes serious psychological, physical and social harm and damage in these children. Sexual exploitation constitutes a crime under Austrian law even if it is perpetrated abroad. Irrespective of the applicable legal provisions in the country where the crime has been committed, Austrian citizens who have their domicile in Austria will be prosecuted under criminal law. International treaties, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography are the basis for international police cooperation and also ensure the extradition of perpetrators.
