EU assistance in emergencies

If you find yourself in an emergency situation in a country outside of the European Union and there is no local Austrian consular or diplomatic representation, you as an Austrian citizen may in line with Article 23 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) contact the local representation of an EU Member State and shall be entitled to assistance and consular protection from another Member State of the European Union (consular protection for EU citizens) under the same conditions as the nationals of this EU Member State:

Article 23 TFEU: Every citizen of the Union shall in the territory of a third country in which the Member State of which he/she is a national is not represented be entitled to protection by the diplomatic or consular authorities of any Member State under the same conditions as the nationals of that state. Member States shall adopt the necessary provisions and start the international negotiations required to secure this protection.
