Working Holiday Application

Australia

The Work and Holiday Visa (WHV) Programme between Austria and Australia has entered into force on 15 February 2018. Visa applications for the WHV Programme will not be accepted before this date.

Under this Programme, Australian citizens aged between 18 and 30 years of age (at the time of application) may submit their application for an Austrian WHV to the Austrian Embassy in Canberra, to VFS Australia or, during their lawful stay in the EU or Switzerland, to the Austrian Consulate General in Munich, or the Austrian Embassy in Laibach, Bratislava and London.

The WHV application may be lodged by the applicant in person at the earliest 3 months before the intended visit. All mandatory documents must be submitted at the time of application. 

To be eligible  

You must:

  • have an Australian passport that is valid for at least three months after your intended departure from Austria
  • be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old, both inclusive at the time of application
  • hold a return ticket or show sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket
  • proof of sufficient financial means for your maintenance for the initial period of stay
  • hold an adequate travel and health insurance for the entire period of your stay (enter Austria for the purpose of holidaying, with work or study being incidental to your holiday
  • provide a “letter of support” of the Department of Home Affairs

You must not

  • bring children or other dependents with you
  • have previously held a WHV under an Austrian working holiday scheme
  • have previously been expelled by a Schengen country and/or must not be considered to be a threat to public policy, internal security or public health    

Documents required for the application 

  • “Austrian Visa D” application form for a stay of up to 12 months
  • passport sized photograph (not older than six months[ nach ICAO-Richtlinie])
  • valid Australian passport (that is valid for at least three months after your intended departure from Austria
  • proof of sufficient financial means for your maintenance for the initial period of stayproof of sufficient financial means for your maintenance for the initial period of stay (original bank statements with banking history, etc.)
  • flight ticket reservation
  • “letter of support” of the relevant Australian authority)
  • Consular fees (equivalent of EUR 100)
  • Visa service provider fees (only if you apply at VFS Australia)

Application:

  • The visa application can be submitted at the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa
  • As an exception, the visa application can be submitted at the Austrian Embassies Ljubljana, London and Bratislava or at the Austrian Consulate General Munich. Information on the Working Holiday Program should be collected primarily at the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa.


Fees:

  • EUR 100 (for a stay of more than 90 days; Visa D – WHP)


Qualifying requirements:

  • completed application form for a National Visa (visa D)
  • one passport photograph according to ICAO regulations
  • valid Canadian passport (valid until at least three months after the last day of validity of the applied visa, at least two free visa pages)
  • police clearance check
  • travel, health and accident insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR (approx. 50,000 CAD) for each medical expense, and repatriation) and validity in the entire Schengen area, including the following details: name of insured person, length of coverage, insurance sum
  • proof of sufficient funds: applicants must show proof of sufficient funds to help cover initial expenses in Austria
  • proof of means of transportation to and from Austria or sufficient funds for purchasing a respective ticket

Application:

  • The visa application can only be submitted at the Austrian Embassy in Santiago de Chile.

Fees:

  • EUR 100 (for a stay of more than 90 days; Visa D – WHP)

Qualifying requirements:

  • completed Visa-D application form 
  • valid passport of Chile  (valid for at least three months after the last day of validity of the applied visa) with at least 2 free pages in the passport
  •  biometric passport picture (according ICAO regulations)
  •  health, accident and travel insurance covering all risks for the entire period of the stay (minimum cover EUR 30,000) including transportation back to the Homecountry
  • sufficient and reasonable financial resources to cover expenses incurred at the beginning of the stay. You can also provide the Embassy with a guarantee letter of a person residing in Austria
  •  proof of transportation (ticket reservation, two ways) or proof of sufficient financial resources to purchase such a ticket

  • Nationals of New Zealand can also submit their application at the VFS Auckland where their biometric data can be collected
  • As an exception, the visa application can be submitted at the Austrian Embassies Ljubljana, London and Bratislava or at the Austrian Consulate General Munich. Information on the Working Holiday Programme should be collected primarily at the Austrian Embassy in Canberra.
