Visa D are national visa, which entitle the holder of the visa to stay for a period from 91 days up to six months in Austria. They can be issued for single or multiple entry. Inter alia Visa D are issued in order to collect a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) straight after arrival.
A (national) visa D, issued by Austria or another Schengen state, entitles the holder to move about freely in the territory of the other Schengen member states for up to 90 days per period of 180 days, given that he/she has a valid travel document and fulfils the entry requirements as laid down in Article 6(1)(a), (c) and (e) of the Regulation (EU) 2016/399 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2016 on a Union Code on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders (Schengen Borders Code). Above, the applicant must not appear in the national list of alerts of the Member State concerned.
If a person intends to stay more than six months in Austria, he/she needs to apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel). Please note that in Austria it is not possible to extend a Visa D.
You can apply for a Visa D at Austrian representations only. If there is no Austrian representation in the home country of the applicant, then the competence rests with the Austrian representation in a neighbouring country. You will find the competent Austrian representation on our website. Entry documents (Einreisetitel) Entry documents (Einreisetitel) are issued as uniform visas, whose issuance requires in general a personal interview of the applicant in the consular department of the representation. Visa applications can be processed at the earliest three months prior to the start of the journey and they should be submitted at the latest three weeks ahead of the start of the journey.
A decision on a visa application is possible only after the payment of the consular fees and the submission of all documents required by the embassy. The fee for a visa of more than 90 days is 100 Euro.
The visa application form for a long-term stay (more than three months) can be collected at the respective Austrian representation free of charge. Please inquire at the representation ahead of submitting an application. The form which can be withdrawn from this website is also eligible for submission at the relevant Austrian representation. Please use the visa application form provided on the right or the form of the respective embassy in order to apply for a visa for a long term stay.
