Anti-Face-Covering Act

We would like to inform you about a new law in Austria that will enter into force on October 1st 2017.

The Anti-Face-Covering Act provides that in public places or in public buildings, facial features may not be hidden or concealed by clothes or other objects in such a way that they are no longer recognizable. Public places are all places which can be entered at all times or at certain times by a group of people not limited beforehand, including transport facilities such as bus, rail, air or maritime traffic.

A violation of this new law is subject to an administrative penalty of up to € 150.00, which may be imposed by police agents. The penalty has to be paid in cash or by credit card.

The security authorities are responsible for the enforcement of the Anti-Face-Covering Act.

The regulation is aimed at ensuring social cohesion and social peace in Austria. We would like to emphasize that all guests are welcome and deserve a safe and enjoyable stay.

With the ban, Austria wants to set a sign for an open society. Therefore, the ban consistently applies to all persons present in Austria.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
