Austria at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development HABITAT III in Quito

Austria to present a case study on housing financing models

The number of people living in metropolitan areas continues to rise. In the context of urban development it is thus all the more important to ensure that cities are a sustainable place to live. Cities therefore need to be safe, ecologically oriented, crisis resistant and innovative as well as designed to take account of people with special needs.

Held from 17 to 20 October 2016 in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, the Third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development “HABITAT III” seeks to define requirements for sustainable urban development and adopt a New Urban Agenda to be applicable around the globe. HABITAT III is being attended by specialised ministers and experts from all UN member states, including Austria.

The New Urban Agenda forms part of the international efforts aimed at global sustainable development, adopted under the heading of “Agenda 2030” by all Heads of State and Government in New York last year. Supported by the United Nations, member states are now tasked with implementing this Agenda at global, national and local level.

At the conference in Quito, Austria will present a case study, sharing the experience it has gained with various models and forms of housing financing.

The City of Vienna is also among the cities nominated for the “Global Greener Cities Award”, which is to be presented on the margins of the conference.
