Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl met with her Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, on 8 March in Vienna for intensive discussions: “We want to further improve our relationship, one step at a time“, the Foreign Minister emphasised at the subsequent press conference. It is the second time already that the ministers have met, with the first meeting taking place as early as late January when Karin Kneissl travelled to Istanbul for bilateral talks. Further meetings are also planned for the months ahead with the aim of further deepening diplomatic ties between the two countries. Foreign Minister Kneissl stressed:
We want to create an atmosphere which allows us to tackle even difficult problems.
On the agenda of today’s meeting were the mutual efforts to further bolster bilateral contacts at all levels, in particular regarding mutual exchange in the area of public administration and business. The implementation of the Islam Law in Austria and the significance of the Turkish community were also discussed. In addition, Karin Kneissl and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu talked about the current situation in Syria. Karin Kneissl advocated a return to the negotiating table and stressed the need for a peaceful solution that takes into consideration the country’s civilian population.
Prior to the official talks, both Foreign Ministers met at the Spanish Riding School and viewed the morning exercise of the Lipizzaners.
