Foreign Minister Kneissl visits Italy and the Vatican

Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl’s second official trip abroad saw her travel on 16 January 2018 to Rome. The agenda included a meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, who is also the current Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). At the beginning of 2018, Italy took over the OSCE Chairmanship from Austria.

In addition to OSCE topics, Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl and her Italian counterpart also discussed current issues related to Austro-Italian ties, the autonomy of South Tyrol, cross-border questions such as migration, and cooperation within the Central European Initiative (CEI).

Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl also met for official talks with the Foreign Minister of the Vatican, Archbishop Paul Gallagher. Austria and the Holy See enjoy close international cooperation and pursue common objectives in many important areas, including peacekeeping and disarmament. Further topics of discussion were interreligious dialogue initiatives, as well as global topics such as migration, climate and environmental protection and the situation in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Kneissl also took the opportunity to pay a visit to the Austrian Cultural Forum in Rome, the oldest independent institution established under Austrian foreign cultural policy.
