On 18 January 2018, Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl visited Bulgaria, which currently holds the EU presidency. Bulgaria will hand over the presidency to Austria on 1 July 2018. The talks between Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Bulgaria Ekaterina Zaharieva thus focused on the plans and objectives of the Bulgarian presidency as well as the harmonization of the two presidencies.
Bringing the Western Balkan countries even closer to the EU is extremely important to Austria and Bulgaria alike and will be a priority of both countries’ EU presidency.
Other topics of discussion also included migration, security policy, the consequences of Brexit – the final negotiations will probably take place during the Austrian EU presidency – current developments in the European Union and the close ties between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl also paid a courtesy call to Bulgarian President Rumen Radev.
