Kurz on the first consular statistics publication: "Continuous service enhancement for Austrian citizens is our aim"

Vienna, 30 June 2014 – The services provided to Austrian citizens and the professional and unbureaucratic support offered to Austrians abroad are among the most important tasks of the Foreign Ministry. "The consular activities are in a very real sense the trademark of the Ministry. It is a priority objective of mine to provide regular, transparent and comprehensive information about these activities and this is why the Foreign Ministry is publishing the first consular activities statistics this year", Federal Minister Sebastian Kurz said. In the framework of today's Consular Conference on further training, the "Citizens Service Award 2014" will be presented to members of the consular services who have shown outstanding commitment.The award recipients include the team of the Austrian Embassies in Damascus and Bangkok, plus Florian Brandl and Stefan Schattovich who both work at the Foreign Ministry in Vienna. "I would like to thank all members of our consular staff who put themselves at the service of the Austrian people day by day for their excellent work", Sebastian Kurz said.

Austrian citizens living abroad or travelling to other countries use the wide range of services provided by the Foreign Ministry. In 2013, the Citizens Service of the Foreign Ministry handled more than 31,000 phone calls; the travel app has been downloaded 116,000 times and the "Citizens Service" section of the Foreign Ministry's website has been accessed many millions of times. According to the Consular Statistics, the Foreign Ministry Staff provided support in some 469,000 cases in 2013, which corresponds to an increase by 11% compared to the year 2012. The highest increase was seen in information provision (+15%). The top three cities on which information was sought were Moscow with 52,800 requests for information, 18,800 inquiries referred to Berlin and nearly 14,000 to Tehran.
