Spindelegger: Austria recognises its responsibility in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Vienna, 1 December 2013 – "Although we have made a lot of progress in the global fight against HIV/AIDS in recent years, we must not delude ourselves with regard to the enormous challenges that are still waiting to be overcome", said Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger on the occasion of World Aids Day on 1 December.

"Austria recognises its responsibility as part of the international community and supports the efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS with the funding of concrete projects", Spindelegger continued. For instance, multilateral development cooperation is currently funding a large-scale project of the United Nation’s Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the protection and treatment of children with HIV/AIDS in the Ukraine, the country with the highest HIV rates in Europe and Central Asia. In addition, Austria has also provided funding for projects targeting reproductive health and women’ rights this year as part of the Global Fund to Fight Aids that is a cornerstone of the United Nation’s Development Programme (UNDP).

In total, Austrian Development Cooperation has provided more than 13.8 million euros since 2002 for the global fight against HIV/AIDS on a bilateral level and as part of UN-AIDS.
