Lopatka: “Business development focus in solid Austrian ties to Qatar”

Austrian State Secretary meets the Emir of Qatar and Qatar’s Foreign Affairs State Secretary for working discussions

Vienna, 28 February 2013 – Austrian State Secretary Reinhold Lopatka met the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and held working discussions with the Qatar Foreign Affairs State Secretary Khalid Bin Mohammad Al Attiyah on the sidelines of the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Vienna today.

“Qatar arranged the last major international meeting of the Alliance, and the new UNAOC High Representative, Nassir Al-Nasser, comes from Qatar. This interest in dialogue is a linking factor between us. Austria is also interested in concluding a cultural agreement with Qatar”, the State Secretary said.

“The opening of our new embassy in Doha at the end of 2011 has brought a new dynamism to our bilateral relations with Qatar. The location in Doha, which is shared with the Austrian Foreign Trade Promotion Service, has helped us to make full use of the market potential in Qatar”, Lopatka said. 60 Austrian companies are now represented in Qatar, and 13 of these already have a permanent representation in the small Gulf state.

“Qatar has already expressed interest in Austrian infrastructure development expertise, in suppliers for its natural gas industries and for medical technology. The Football World Cup 2022 that will be hosted by the country, will certainly represent a particularly good opportunity for Austrian companies”, the State Secretary said. “We are able to offer our experience and know-how in the planning, infrastructure development and organisation of large-scale sports events”, Lopatka added.

The working discussions also covered the situation in Syria and in the Palestinian territories.
