Lopatka: "Reliable energy supply is of great importance for the EU"

State Secretary Lopatka visits Energie AG in Upper Austria on his DARUM EUROPA information tour

Linz, 23 April 201 – "Reliable energy supply is one of the priorities of EU policies", State Secretary Reinhold Lopatka said when he visited utility company "Energie AG" in Linz on his DARUM EUROPA information tour today where he discussed current EU matters with the employees. Energie AG supplies electrical energy to more than a million people, and provides a million others in Austria and abroad with clean drinking water. The company also provides disposal services for six million people in Central and Eastern Europe. The markets of the group of companies are located in Austria, Southern Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine and Moldova.

"Energie AG is in good company. We earn 6 out of every 10 euros from exports; 70 percent of our exports go to other EU nations. Since Austria's accession to the EU in 1995, 13,000 additional jobs have been created every year", the State Secretary said.

"Small and medium-sized Austrian companies secure numerous jobs and guarantee the competitiveness of our country. Austria has for years had the lowest unemployment rate in Europe because it knows how to make excellent use of the large EU export market. The EU is the biggest economic power in the world today. It is home to no more than 7 percent of the world's total population, but it accounts for 25 percent of the worldwide economic output and 50 percent of global social spending", the State Secretary said. "We need to stay competitive to keep this level."
