Kyrle: "Interreligious dialogue contributes to securing peace"

Secretary General Kyrle attends first Global Forum of the Vienna Dialogue Centre

Vienna, 19 November 2013 – On 18 and 19 November 2013, the Vienna Dialogue Centre (King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue – KAICIID) held the first major conference since its opening on 26 November 2012. "This conference is in perfect line with the Austrian tradition of dialogue. It is our aim to contribute to long-term global confidence-building and peacekeeping by taking initiatives with regard to the dialogue of cultures and religions", said Dr. Johannes Kyrle, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, who together with Minister Dr. Claudia Schmied represented Austria at the Global Forum.

Some 500 politicians, experts and representatives of religious communities gathered at the event, which was held under the title "The Image of the Other: Interreligious and Intercultural Learning" to take stock of the work performed by the Centre during its first year, to hear the opinions of relevant stakeholders and to present plans of the work ahead.

KAICIID's first year was dedicated mainly to interreligious and intercultural learning. The Global Forum was the high point after a series of four regional conferences organised by the Dialogue Centre in Vienna, Addis Ababa, New Delhi and Buenos Aires since May 2013. The participants of the workshops exchanged their own experience gained in the field of interreligious and intercultural learning and presented the tested methods and approaches applied in their countries. The religion-specific challenges of interreligious and intercultural learning were discussed and tangible recommendations were made. These recommendations have now been presented at the Global Forum.
