New York, 2 July 2013 – Georg Friedrich Haas will take over the renowned chair for composition at the Composition Faculty of Columbia University New York in September 2013. The Austrian Cultural Forum New York and the Argento New Music Project celebrated this appointment on 2 July by presenting outstanding expressionist pieces of the Second Viennese School as well as the US première of the vocal-instrumental version of "Atthis", an expressionist composition and vocal virtuoso piece for soprano and ensemble by Georg Friedrich Haas. The work of the composer, who was born in Graz, is considered to be multi-faceted and rich in sound-dramatic composition qualities defined less by assonance than by discord. Haas is of the opinion that different musical traditions do not strive for conformity with semi-tone music but seek to distance themselves from it.
The cooperation of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York with Georg Friedrich Haas dates back to the year 2009 when an entire evening was dedicated to his work for the first time in the framework of the ACFNY Composer Series. Some of his compositions were also presented in 2009 and 2010 at the Moving Sounds Festival. In 2010, the New York Times found the performance of his "Third String Quartet" at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York by the acclaimed JACK Quartet to be one of the best concerts of the year.
The ACFNY has set itself the task not only to trace the Austrian musical exiles in the USA (Schönberg, Korngold, Zeisel, etc.), but also – and in particular – to introduce contemporary composers from Austria to the USA. Premières and first nights have thus become a hallmark of the ACF New York over the past few years and have earned it repeated accolades in the American media.
