Vienna, 4 October 2012 - "Vienna is becoming the United Nations energy hub - yet more proof of the city's role as official seat of UN agencies and organisations", Spindelegger said in appreciation of the decision to open the new UN Office of UN Secretary General's initiative "Sustainable Energy for All" in Vienna. "I would like to congratulate Kandeh Yumkella, in particular, on his new task that reflects his unceasing commitment to the issue of energy", Spindelegger said. He congratulated UNIDO Director-General Kandeh Yumkella on his appointment as UN Special Representative for "Sustainable Energy for All".
"The access to affordable and sustainable energy supply is a fundamental prerequisite for development and for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Energy means access to healthcare, education, clean water and food security", Vice-Chancellor Spindelegger said and noted the fact that renewable energy and energy efficiency are priority issues of Austrian Development Cooperation. "Moreover, Austria together with the UNIDO and IIASA organises the biennial Vienna Energy Forum. The Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE) was also launched in Vienna", Spindelegger added.
The Sustainable Energy for All initiative of the UN Secretary General has set itself the following objectives to be achieved by 2030: universal access to sustainable energy, doubling the increase of energy efficiency, doubling the share of renewable energies in the international energy mix. More than 50 governments are already on board. 50 billion USD have been promised by private investors alone; more than one billion people are to profit from this. Hundreds of concrete commitments have been made by all sectors, both public and private, for projects to implement the initiative.
