Lopatka: “Strengthen network with the Caribbean“

Austrian State Secretary meets Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States

Vienna, 19 September 2012 – State Secretary Reinhold Lopatka had a meeting today with the Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Len Ishmael, and confirmed Austria’s interest in deepening cooperation with the countries of the Caribbean.

“The Austrian financed training courses for diplomats from the Caribbean give us the opportunity to strengthen our network of personal contacts in the region and to pass on our foreign policy expertise“, Lopatka said. Only recently another one of these courses was held at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna.

“Against the background of the important role that Vienna plays as a location of international organisations, we welcome the plans of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to establish a representation office in Vienna. I have assured Director General Ishmael of our full support for this project and also expressed our intention to cooperate with the OECS in the framework of twinning projects, for example in the field of e-government”, the State Secretary said after the meeting.

Since 2012 Austria has had observer status in the OECS that was founded in 1981. The organisation has nine member states (Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines). Len Ishmael has been Director General of the OECS since April 2009.
