Spindelegger condems attack on the British Embassy in Iran

Vienna, 29 November 2011 – “Iran is now threatening to place itself completely outside the international legal framework with the attack on the British Embassy in Tehran. If Iran believes that actions of this kind can break European solidarity, it is in error. The authorities in Tehran are urgently reminded to carry out their duties under international law and to protect diplomatic facilities unequivocally and immediately.” Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger reacted with these clear words today to the news of the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran by demonstrators.

The Iranian Ambassador in Vienna had already been summoned to the Foreign Ministry before this event to receive an official Austrian complaint about repeated measures to hinder the work of European diplomatic missions in Tehran and against the demand of the Iranian Parliament that the Iranian government expel the British Ambassador from the country.
