Spindelegger: “Austria promotes ecological, economic and social dimension of sustainability”

Austria’s Foreign Minister at the opening of the 14th General Conference of UNIDO

Vienna, 28 November 2011 – “UNIDO is the only organisation whose work is targeted at a long-term reduction of poverty through the development of industrial economy and trade capacities, giving special consideration to energy and environmental aspects“, Vice Chancellor, Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said today at the opening of the 14th General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation in Vienna. The focus of this year’s conference is on strategies for sustainable industrial development.

From the Austrian point of view it is mainly UNIDO’s endeavours to create long-term employment for micro-companies in developing countries, especially for women and young people, who are of the greatest importance. As well are its efforts to support renewable energies and ecologically friendly production processes. Austria has dedicated some 11.4 million euros to the UNIDO programme for resource-saving and clean production over the past ten years.

“Sustained industrial development will only be successful in the long run if we succeed in finding a fair solution to the urgent problem of using limited global resources while doing as little damage as possible to our environment and climate. At the same time it must be ensured that everyone is able to participate in the process of development”, Spindelegger said. “Unemployment, and especially unemployment among young people, is increasing worldwide, posing a major challenge for the international community. The development in the Arab world is the most vivid example. Productive employment of as many people from as many sections of society as possible is a decisive factor for social peace and guarantees long-term sustained development and security.”

Vice Chancellor Spindelegger thanked UNIDO Director General, Kandeh Yumkella, for his successful presidency of the organisation and honoured his outstanding international commitment to sustainable development in his capacity of chairman of UN Energy and Co-Chairman of the High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL). “UNIDO’s expertise in commercial and industrial aspects of development policy is uncontested, and Austria is proud to be home to the UNIDO headquarters”, the Foreign Minister concluded.
