Vienna, 2 November 2011 – Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger expressed great sorrow on the sudden death of the Czech writer, diplomat and former dissident Jiři Gruša.
The significance of Jiři Gruša for Austria was by no means limited to his importance as a contemporary poet and author of European format, Spindelegger said in a tribute: “Jiři Gruša was a living link between the Czech Republic and Austria. His many years as Czech ambassador to Vienna followed by his four year term as director of the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna were marked by his efforts to reinforce the strong cultural, intellectual and political networks that exist between the two countries and also between all the states of Central Europe. Jiři Gruša will remain in our memories as a good neighbour and friend of Austria and as a mediator of the Central European dimension.”
