Madrid, 18 May 2010 - Yesterday, Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger met his British counterpart, William Hague, on the margins of the EU Latin America Summit. Minister Spindelegger congratulated Hague on his recent appointment as Britain’s new Foreign Secretary and on his party’s electoral victory.
Their talks focused on bilateral issues, as well as on cooperation within the EU and the UN Security Council – in particular, as regards the latest developments concerning Iran. Both Ministers emphasised that they wanted to continue to strengthen the excellent cooperation between the United Kingdom and Austria. “Great Britain is an important partner within the EU as well as in the address of shared major concerns, such as the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty or the Western Balkans’ swift rapprochement with the EU. I expect the future British government to make a constructive contribution at the European level – in particular, as regards current crisis management. I am convinced that our partnership will make close cooperation possible,” stated Spindelegger. The two ministers emphasised they would work together within the United Nations on issues such as the Iranian nuclear question.
