Spindelegger: "Continuing the close and trusting partnership with Hungary"

Meeting with Hungary's designated Foreign Minister Martonyi

Vienna, 30 April 2010 – Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger met today with the designated Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi in Vienna for an informal exchange of opinions. Martonyi already served as Foreign Minister in the first FIDESZ government from 1998 to 2002.

"The fact that the meeting takes place even before the swearing-in ceremony once again illustrates the excellent relations between Hungary and Austria. I am convinced that our trusting partnership will continue unaltered, and that we shall be working very closely on all levels, as we have done in the past", said Spindelegger.

Apart from a bilateral tour d’ horizon, the two Foreign Ministers discussed topical issues on a European level, such as the upcoming Hungarian EU presidency, the EU strategy for the Danube Region, and the developments on the Western Balkans, for which Austria and Hungary will continue to persistently back a quick EU integration. Martonyi also informed his Austrian colleague about the programme of the future Hungarian government, and assured him of continuity in their bilateral relations.

Finally, Spindelegger invited his colleague to come to Austria on an official visit soon after the new Hungarian government is inaugurated.
