Rome, 17 March 2010 – Senior Italian police officers today returned two paintings, stolen 24 years ago from the Church of Bad St. Leonhard in Carinthia, to authorities at the Austrian Embassy to the Holy See in Rome. These works had been recovered near Ancona in 2008 by a special Italian police unit.
In a small formal ceremony the two pictures were presented to Eduard Mahlknecht, custodian of the Gurk/Klagenfurt Diocese, together with representatives of Carinthia’s Provincial Police. During the ceremony the Austrian Ambassador to the Holy See and the liaison officer of the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Rome paid tribute to the excellent work of the Italian police as well as their outstanding cooperation with the Austrian authorities.
