Vienna, 14 December 2009 – In view of the forthcoming Christmas holidays and winter travel season when numerous Austrians will be taking the opportunity for trips abroad, the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs reminds those concerned of its regularly updated travel information for 193 countries and its travel warnings for a total of 32 countries and regions, respectively. Travellers are urgently requested to gather extensive information from various sources before choosing their destination, prepare their trips carefully and refrain from going to places for which travel warnings have been issued.
To obtain travel information you can visit the homepage of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs – www.bmeia.gv.at. On account of the latest kidnappings of several European citizens in North Africa, the Foreign Ministry would like to draw special attention to the fact that travel warnings have been issued for all regions of the Sahara. In areas for which a travel warning has been issued, the Foreign Ministry can provide only very limited support, if any, in the event of emergencies.
Finally, attention is drawn to the fact that the Consular Fee Act has been amended with effect from 1 January 2010 onwards, which makes it easier for the Ministry to raise claims for compensation against persons who travel to endangered areas in spite of a valid travel warning and who have to resort to Austrian authorities for help
