Vienna, October 12th 2009 – An international workshop bringing together national counterterrorism coordinators of more than a hundred United Nations member states and representatives from a total of forty international and regional organizations and relevant UN units for the first time will take place from 12th to 13th October 2009 in the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
During the press conference, Ambassador Dr. Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger, Head of the Legal and Consular Section in the Austrian Foreign Ministry emphasized on behalf of the co-sponsors Costa Rica, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Slovakia, Turkey, and Austria the importance of the workshop as a platform for a greater exchange of experiences and good practices of the member states in dealing with the global threat from terrorism. "The objective of this initiative is a better networking of national and global efforts in counterterrorism", said Dr. Tichy-Fisslberger.
Austria already began promoting the implementation of a global counterterrorism strategy in 2007 by hosting an international symposium on the issue.
The workshop will be carried out in close cooperation with relevant United Nations units. The Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force, Jean-Paul Laborde, described the initiative by the member states to network their national counterterrorism coordinators as indispensable for the joint efforts to maintain peace and security. The Head of the Vienna-based United Nations Terrorism Prevention Branch, Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin, pointed out to the importance of the respect of human rights and the principles of the rule of law as a basis for counterterrorism. Her unit makes a valuable contribution by supporting member states in implementing their legal obligations and in developing state capacities.
