Austrian honor for Professor Aylâ Neusel

Prominent university planner and researcher on women’s issues Prof. Aylâ Neusel received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art

Berlin, October 13th 2009 -In a festive reception at the Austrian Embassy on October 13th 2009, the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria Dr. Ralph Scheide presented the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art to Professor Aylâ Neusel. The invited guests included numerous representatives from the world of politics and science.

Professor Aylâ Neusel is an outstanding personality who has been involved in the scientific and political promotion of women in academia and society in Germany and Austria for decades, and who has helped reform their underlying conditions. Aylâ Neusel has succeeded in implementing new concepts in university and women’s policies, not least due to her ability to inspire people and institutions and to win them over for her ideas. Neusel planned a university (University of Kassel) and served as its first vice president. From 1999 to 2003, she was the president of the “International Women’s University” (IFU) in Hannover, which she founded herself. In 2000, this project brought 150 women scientists from different disciplines in 105 countries to Germany for three months. From 2003 to 2008, Professor Neusel was a member of the first university council of the University of Vienna. With Professor Neusel, this is the first time that this honor is awarded to a member of a university council in Austria.

In addition, Professor Neusel has held leading positions in supraregional bodies responsible for university and science policy, where she stood out through her leadership qualities, creativity, and perseverance.

Professor Aylâ Neusel was born in Istanbul. Following her studies and a PhD at the University of Stuttgart, Professor Neusel became a member of the project group for the creation of the Gesamthochschule Kassel - today the University of Kassel – from 1971 to 1973. From 1986 to 1990, she served as vice president of the Gesamthochschule Kassel and worked as a professor for university research at the international centre for university research of the University of Kassel until her retirement in 2001. In the nineties, Neusel also served as a curator of the Volkswagen Foundation. Professor Neusel is married and has two children.
