Vienna, 26 November 2008 - "Anne-Sophie Mutter is a musical gift to the world and she is part of the responsible society, something I particularly appreciate", said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik today in Vienna at the presentation of the Grand Decoration of Honor for Merit to the Republic of Austria awarded by the Federal President.
"I am very glad and I admire the fact that Anne-Sophie Mutter perceives her worldwide reputation as a mandate for a good cause", said Plassnik. "This exceptional artist is giving us support, and she shares important international concerns with us, such as the fight against cluster munition."
"The willingness to help", continued the Foreign Minister, "has been a characteristic of Anne-Sophie Mutter since she was young. She gave her first benefit concert at the age of nine. She has continued on this path with the same persistence as with her artistic career. In a most exceptional manner, Anne-Sophie Mutter represents the inspiring and uniting power of music. I am happy for this distinction; it represents an acknowledgment by Austria. Anne-Sophie Mutter has supported the SOS Kinderdorf and other important Austrian projects such as 'Welt ohne Minen' (a world without mines) through her concerts, with her charisma and the continuity of her engagement."
The Foreign Minister also pointed out that Anne-Sophie Mutter has long been involved in the promotion of new talents among young strings. Finally, Plassnik mentioned the close and multifaceted relationship between the violin virtuoso and Austria: "Anne-Sophie Mutter and her two children live in Austria. She communicates Austrian music in many countries, and the benefit concerts at which she performed always featured works by Austrian composers."
