Vienna, 12 December 2007 - Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik expressed her deep concern about yesterday’s terrorist attacks in Algiers which caused the death and injury of dozens of people: "The fact that young people, students and employees of the UNHCR (Office of the UN High Commissioner of Refugees) are among the casualties shows the extent of inhumanity behind such cowardly terrorist acts. People have once again become victims of unscrupulous assassins claiming to act in the name of religion," stated the Foreign Ministers.
Plassnik expressed her deep sympathy with the Algerian people and the victims´ relatives. On this tragic occasion she paid special tribute to the worldwide commitment of UN staff, who sometimes carries out work in the interests of peace and humanity under extremely difficult conditions.
The Foreign Minister stressed the international community’s determination to combat terrorist groups through intensive transborder cooperation and to call them to account using all means available to a state based on the rule of law.
