Plassnik: "Clear mandate for maintaining Serbia’s European course"

Foreign Minister welcomes outcome of Serbia’s parliamentary elections

Brussels, 22 January 2007 - "Yesterday’s election outcome entails the clear mandate to maintain and consolidate the European course of the country. Serbia now has the chance of turning from a spectator into an active participant, co-shaping the future on its path to Europe," stated Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, commenting on the outcome of yesterday’s parliamentary elections prior to the Council meeting.

"It is imperative not to waste time. The democratic forces must come to a swift agreement on resilient cooperation. To meet the forthcoming challenges successfully, Serbia needs a forward-looking government," continued Plassnik.

Asked to comment on the status negotiations for Kosovo, Plassnik said she had full confidence in the prudence and experience of chief UN negotiator Martti Ahtisaari. "I am convinced that he is working carefully and persistently on a permanent solution to the status question," concluded Plassnik.
