Plassnik: “Thorough investigation of the attack on the UN base in Lebanon”

Vienna, 28 July 2006 - "Via the UN in New York Austria has called for an immediate and thorough investigation of the strike against unarmed UN observers in Lebanon," said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik today.

"We therefore welcome the UN Security Council’s call to the Israeli government for a comprehensive investigation of the incident in a declaration by the Presidency last night. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni also told me personally that the matter would be subject to an immediate investigation," continued Plassnik.

"On 26 July 2006, Austria also called upon the UN in New York to launch an immediate investigation of the strike against the Khiam post by the UN as well. This attack must be fully explained," emphasised the Foreign Minister.

Within the framework of the United Nations a special fact-finding commission is being set up to ensure a thorough investigation. The UN Secretariat will elaborate a detailed report which will then be handed on to Austria.

In this connection Plassnik also mentioned the UN decision to temporarily withdraw UN soldiers from the remaining observation posts in south Lebanon in view of the current situation. The Austrian UN soldiers who were serving at these posts are now at the headquarters of the UN Lebanon mission UNIFIL based at Naqoura.
