Vienna, 13 October 2006 - "200 years of Liechtenstein’s sovereignty are 200 years of goodneighbourly partnership in practice," said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik on the margins of the formal ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of Liechteinstein’s sovereignty at the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna.
"Liechtenstein and Austria are connected by a reliable, dense and unique network of ties. In the past 200 years the strong links between Vaduz and Vienna have multiplied – in interpersonal, cultural, political and economic terms," said Plassnik. "Another line of connection is our close cooperation in the multilateral area – such as in the European Economic Area, in the UN, the OSCE and in the Council of Europe. We also cooperate in specific areas, not least in the field of development cooperation where we support joint projects, for instance in Bosnia and in the Middle East," she added. The Foreign Minister recalled the successful endeavours of the Austrian EU Presidency in connection with Liechtenstein’s association with the Schengen agreement. "We hope that the association of our two neighbouring countries, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, with the Schengen agreement can be realised as scheduled and without delay," emphasised Plassnik.
In addition to listening to a concert by the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra, Plassnik and her Liechtenstein counterpart Rita Kieber-Beck seized the opportunity for talks on topical issues and fields of cooperation, such as the United Nations.
This was the third meeting between Foreign Minister Plassnik and Government Counsellor Kieber-Beck in recent months, following the trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria on 19 July in Vaduz and a meeting within the network of female foreign ministers in New York.
