Plassnik: “Appeal for immediate ceasefire“

Foreign Minister on Qana tragedy

Vienna, 30 July 2006 - "I am deeply shocked by the news from Qana and the incredible suffering of defenceless people. It is unacceptable that Israeli air raids whose main victim is the civilian population are repeatedly described as errors and misunderstandings," said Foreign Minister Plassnik.

"This blind violence must be brought to a halt. That is the dictate of the hour. A ceasefire must be negotiated without delay. I emphatically appeal to both the Israeli army and Hezbollah to cease their attacks and to stop resisting diplomatic efforts for an immediate ceasefire," said Plassnik.

An extraordinary Council of EU Foreign Ministers will deal with the situation in Lebanon and the humanitarian situation next Tuesday. At the same time, in the UN Security Council in New York efforts are under way to elaborate a Security Council Resolution.
