Presentation of document ratifying the Nuclear Security Convention
Vienna, 18 September 2006 - At the 50th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency today, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik presented the Austrian ratification document for the amendment of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material to IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei.
The adjustment of the Convention to reflect the challenges of the 21st century is based on an Austrian initiative. "The protection of nuclear material and nuclear plants must meet the most stringent global security standards. It was therefore important to us to push the necessary adjustments to the Convention. The amended Convention is an important contribution to nuclear security and to the fight against terrorism," said Plassnik.
In July 2005 a conference held in Vienna agreed on the Austrian draft amendment. The revision of the Convention made it possible to make the necessary amendments, namely the extension of its scope of application, which now comprises domestic storage, use and transport of nuclear material. Moreover, the Parties to the Convention will have to impose sanctions under criminal law if the provisions are not complied with.
