Culture Matters: Intensified cultural cooperation with Croatia

Successful completion of talks on culture between Croatia and Austria in Zagreb

Vienna, 12 October 2006 - On 11 October 2006 a cooperation programme in the fields of culture and education for the years 2006 – 2009 was adopted in Zagreb. It is the first programme to have been elaborated by the Austrian and Croatian governments since the agreement on cooperation in the fields of culture and education entered into force on 1 October 2005.

The close bilateral relations between Austria and Croatia are also reflected in the cooperation programme that has just been signed. The aim of the programme is to contribute to a further intensification of bilateral relations and cultural cooperation, particularly in fields such as literature, art, photography, film, theatre, dance, music, protection of national heritage, archives, libraries and museums.

The Austrian Cultural Forum in Zagreb and the Croatian Embassy in Vienna will play a special role in implementing the bilateral cooperation in the areas mentioned.

Furthermore, Austria sees the adoption of the agreed cooperation programme as an opportunity to provide additional stimuli in the fields of culture and education within the framework of the concept for the intensification of international cultural policy (“Culture Matters. Austrian Cultural Cooperation with South-East European Countries”), which was introduced in past summer, with the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia), thus making a contribution to support them until the countries of this region become integrated in the EU.
