Winkler: "Long-term support of the international community of importance to Haiti"

State Secretary Winkler meets with Foreign Minister of Haiti

Vienna, 27 September 2005 - Today, State Secretary Hans Winkler met with the Foreign Minister of Haiti, Hérard Abraham, for an exchange of opinions. In addition to the domestic political situation in Haiti and the preparations of the Latortue interim government for the electrions scheduled for the end of 2005, the talks focused on the EU-Latin America summit planned for May 2006.

Referring to the elections, which will probably be held towards the end of the year, Winkler emphasised the importance of the UN mission in Haiti, which was extended again in June and which is also supported by Austria. "The ongoing registration of voters and the thorough preparation for the elections is already a positive sign and a significant step towards democracy", stressed Winkler.

Winkler also informed the Foreign Minister about the status of the preparations for the Austrian EU Presidency and the planned summit of the heads of state and government of the EU and Latin America, which will take place in May 2006. "A close cooperation - not only from the economic point of view but also with regard to social and cultural aspects - can benefit both sides", said Winkler.

State Secretary Winkler will meet with the Foreign Minister of the Seychelles, Patrick Pillay, for talks on Friday.
