Plassnik welcomes Mohamed ElBaradei’s reappointment as IAEA Director General

The Foreign Minister: "ElBaradei has done excellent work"

Vienna, 13 June 2005 - Minister for Foreign Affairs Ursula Plassnik today welcomed Mohamed ElBaradei’s unanimous reappointment as Director General of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency. "I congratulate Dr. ElBaradei for his reappointment by the IAEA Board of Governors. In his previous two terms during the past eight years, he headed the Agency in an excellent manner and acted with much circumspection and objectivity also in the difficult times of the recent past. As a consequence, Austria supported his candidacy from the beginning", the Foreign Minister said.

Plassnik appreciated that the objections which had been voiced against ElBaradei’s reappointment could finally be overcome. She emphasised that it was of the utmost importance in this phase which was so decisive for nuclear non-proliferation that the IAEA enjoyed the support and confidence of all Member States.

The Foreign Minister added: "We, like our partners in the European Union, are convinced that the IAEA, headed by Dr. ElBaradei, will continue to meet the challenges which the regime of nuclear non-proliferation is exposed to with the same determination as in the past years. To this end, I wish the Agency and its Director General success and endurance."
