Plassnik and Winkler next week at the European Parliament

Daniela Raschhofer to join Austrian EU Presidency team in Brussels

Vienna, 30 August 2005 - "The close cooperation between the Austrian Parliament and the European Parliament has been one of my main concerns since I took office," says Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik. As a democratic body with legislative, budgetary and control powers, the European Parliament will also be an extremely important partner for us during our EU Presidency in the first half of 2006."

A dense network of contacts is thus already being established in the run-up to Austria’s EU Presidency: Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik and State Secretary Hans Winkler will be at the European Parliament on 8 September for talks on the preparations for the Austrian EU Presidency. Meetings have been scheduled with Josep Borrell, President of the EU Parliament, leaders of parliamentary parties and committee heads. Plassnik and Winkler will also meet with Austrian MEPs.

Plassnik has announced that former MEP Daniela Raschhofer will join the Austrian Presidency team at the Permanent Mission in Brussels with a view to strengthening existing contacts with the European Parliament. Her considerable parliamentary experience and commitment will help to foster close and friendly cooperation between the Austrian Presidency and the European Parliament.
