Plassnik: "Signal of continuity in commitment to peace, solidarity and justice"

Minister for Foreign Affairs on Cardinal Ratzinger's election as the new pope

Vienna, 19 April 2005 - "I see the election of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, a close personal confidant of John Paul II, as the new pope as a clear signal that the new pontifex intends to continue his great predecessor's outstanding commitment to peace, solidarity and justice", said Minister for Foreign Affairs Ursula Plassnik in an initial reaction to the conclave's decision. "In this endeavour the new Pope Benedict XVI can count on the goodwill, warm wishes and full support of Austria," she added.

The Foreign Minister went on to express her pleasure that with Joseph Ratzinger a long-term friend of Austria had been appointed head of the Roman Catholic Church.
