Plassnik: EU has a key role to play in the fight against terrorism

Meeting with EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator Gijs de Vries

Vienna, 31 August 2005 - In the run-up to the Austrian EU Presidency, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik held talks today with the EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator Gijs de Vries on the European and international dimension of the fight against terrorism.

"The subject of security and the question of suitable measures to combat terrorism will be one of the priority issues during Austria’s EU Presidency. I therefore attach importance to cooperating closely with Gijs de Vries," said Plassnik. Referring to the Vienna-based Terrorism Prevention Branch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Foreign Minister pointed to the major role played by Vienna as a UN centre of competence for security matters. It was also important, she said, to take steps to prevent the spread of fear and insecurity in our society.

The EU would be focusing particularly on preventing terrorism, she continued, and dialogue among civilisations was therefore of the utmost importance. In that context, Plastic also informed the EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator about a top-level international conference entitled "Islam in a Pluralistic World" to be held in Vienna from 14 to 16 November 2005.
