Austrian Embassy in Nicosia officially opened

Austrian Consulate in Cyprus since 1760

Vienna, 20 October 2005 - The Austrian Embassy in Nicosia was officially opened today by the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Johannes Kyrle, in a ceremony attended by about 150 Austrian and foreign guests. The host country was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Cypriot Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sotos Zackheos, and by delegations from various Cypriot ministries.

The Austrian Embassy in Nicosia is located in the immediate vicinity of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Palace. The embassy building also houses the Dutch diplomatic representation. In the middle of next year, the French Embassy will also be accommodated in this building.

Austrian-Cypriot relations look back on a long tradition. An Austrian Consulate was established in Larnaca as early as 1760. The decision to open an embassy in Nicosia was taken as a result of intensified relations between Austria and Cyprus, in particular since the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU in 2004.
