Ministry for Foreign Affairs: Vienna - Official Seat of 31 International Organisations

Seat of one of the three UN headquarters

Vienna, 21 July 2004 - The Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs knows of considerations on the part of the Libanese government to offer the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to move its headquarters to Beirut only from the media. The OPEC has not expressed any intentions whatsoever of leaving the Austrian capital. The OPEC headquarters in Vienna are currently being renovated, with the Federal Government and the City of Vienna sharing in the costs.

Austria is very interested in further consolidating and expanding Vienna’s position as an official seat of international organisations. A total of 31 international organisations have established their head offices in the city, and Vienna is also one of the three headquarters of the United Nations - the only one in the EU. The Vienna International Centre celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

In the past few years, Austria has successfully and significantly contributed to the fact that the international organisations based in the country have been able to carry out their operations in an excellent working environment, and it will further pursue this policy in the future. Austria is also very interested in bringing more international organisations to Vienna.
