Ferrero-Waldner condemns killing of Hamas leader Rantisi

Vienna, 19 April 2004 - In informal talks during her presidential-election-campaign day in Carinthia Minister for Foreign Affairs Ferrero-Waldner also commented on the killing of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi: "I condemn the targeted extra-judicial killing of Hamas leader Rantisi. Israel has, of course, the right to take decisive action against terrorism, but this has to be done within the framework of international law. Austria, together with the European Union, has therefore always disapproved of targeted killings." The Foreign Minister continued by clarifying that a solution to the Middle East question could only be reached by means of negotiations between the conflicting parties: "negotiations will be the only way of achieving a fair and lasting peace settlement", stated the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
