Ferrero-Waldner: "Sudan must fulfil the demands of the international community in a provable and verifiable way"

Brussels, 12 July 2004 - On Monday afternoon, the External Relations Council of Foreign Ministers in Brussels held extensive consultations on the situation in Darfur/Sudan. In the context of these deliberations, Austrian Foreign Minister Ferrero-Waldner called on Sudan to fulfil the demands made by the EU in a provable and verifiable way.

"The engagement of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is heading in the same direction", said Ferrero-Waldner. She referred to the Joint Communiqué issued following the negotiations between the UN Secretary General and the Sudanese government, whose implementation is closely monitored by the UN Security Council.

"I hope that the concerted effort of the international community will compel Sudan to find a political solution to the conflict in the troubled region", stated the Foreign Minister. "In any case, I will address the situation in Darfur during my talks with UN Secretary General Annan on the occasion of his visit to Austria this week."

Federal Minister Ferrero-Waldner had urged representatives of the USA, Canada and Norway at the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and US Secretary of State Grossman during his visit to Vienna to take concerted transatlantic action to deal with the Darfur crisis. Further talks were held at the relevant level with the Sudanese Ambassador in Vienna on Monday.
