Ferrero-Waldner: "Federal President Thomas Klestil was a committed Austrian and European"

"My sincere condolences to his family"

Vienna, 7 July 2004 - "The death of a human being leaves us all lost for words. In this difficult hour I can only offer my sincere condolences to the family of Federal President Dr. Thomas Klestil and wish them much strength in this situation," Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner said on Wednesday morning.

"It is particularly sad that Federal President Klestil died just a few days before the end of his term and that we will not be able to express to him personally our final acknowledgement and the official thanks of the Republic of Austria for his work and commitment."

Foreign Minister Ferrero-Waldner continued: "President Klestil was a committed Austrian and European. In Central Europe especially he set an example and indicated directions by initiating the Meeting of the Presidents of Central European States. This forum has long become an institution that stands as a symbol for the new united Europe."
