South African passport holders need for non touristic purposes and a maximum stay of six months a valid passport and a visa D. An application is to be submitted no more than three months ahead of their journey and no later than 15 days prior to departure.
Application of the visa
The passport must be valid for a period of at least three months after the applicant’s last day of stay in Austria / the Schengen states and the general validity of the document must not exceed ten years. The passport must have 2 blank pages to affix the visa. Foreign passport holders need to have a visa/temporary permit for South Africa, which is valid for a period of at least 3 months after their return to South Africa.
RSA passport holders: up to 10 working days after submitting the application
Foreign passport holders: can take up to 60 days, depending on the country of issue
Applications for a D-Visa (National Visa) can only be submitted at the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 to 12:00.
An appointment is necessary for the submitting of the D-Visa application. To avoid unnecessary queuing and to provide a fast and more efficient submission, the Embassy has introduced an Online Registration Service - see Link "On the subject". Applications without appointment will not be accepted. Please be advised that the Embassy will not give any information by telephone or email on ongoing applications.

The consular fees for a national Visa D is EUR 100 payable in Rand in cash, credit- or debit card. The Exchange rate will be published monthly on the first site of our Homepage. The consular fee is payable when applying for a visa and will - even if the visa cannot be issued - not be refunded. Only after payment the visa application can be processed.
