Face cover ban in Austria
On October 1st 2017 the new Anti-Face-Veiling Act entered into force in Austria and consistently applies to all persons present in Austria.
The Anti-Face-Veiling Act provides that in public places or in public buildings, facial features may not be hidden or concealed by clothes or other objects in such a way that they are no longer recognizable. Public places are all places which can be entered at all times or at certain times by a group of people not limited beforehand, including transport facilities such as bus, rail, air or maritime traffic. A violation of this new law is subject to an administrative penalty of up to € 150.00, which may be imposed by police agents. The penalty has to be paid in cash or by credit card.
Please be aware that in any case you must uncover your face on the spot when asked to. If ultimately you continue engaging in the offence by refusing to uncover the face, attempt to repeat it in spite of being admonished, or your identity is impossible to determine, you might have to accompany the police agent to the police station.
