Wood Sculpture Workshop in Botswana
Between 20th and 24th June 2016 the Austrian sculptor Christiane Stolhofer conducted a wood sculpture workshop for young artists from the Maun region. The aim of the workshop, which was sponsored by the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria, was to improve the skills of young, local artists, in order allow them to sell their sculptures on the local market.
A collection of inspiring, true stories of South Africans on their journey from oppression to freedom compiled by Margit Niederhuber and Albie Sachs and brought to life with original music by Christian Radovan and eloquent reading by Vuyelwa Maluleke.
The event will take place at the Soweto Theatre on the 20th of July at 7pm.
Energy Globe Awards 2016
On June 22nd 2016 H.E. Ambassador Brigitte Öppinger-Walchshofer presented the national „Energy Globe Awards” for the extraordinary energy-saving and environmentally friendly projects from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique.
The “Energy Globe Award” was founded by Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann in 1999 with the intention of making the audience aware of already existing solutions for environmental Problems.
35th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition
From 25th of June until 2nd of July 2016 the Final Rounds and the Final of the 35th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition were taking place in Cape Town. The Belvedere Singing Competition one of the world’s best networked singing competition based in Vienna/Austria. 16 singers from nine different countries could qualify for the Finals, among them four singers from South Africa, two from Italy, Russia, South Korea and USA and one from Armenia, Germany, Lithuania and Switzerand.
South Africa meets Haslach
Three young SA musicians from Soshanguve and Soweto had the opportunity to go on a musical training tour to Austria at the end of June.
The Austrian Embassy in Pretoria and the SA enterprise Mondi sponsored that educational trip so that these young musicians from SA were able to experience Austrian culture and the high quality of music in the music schools in Upper Austria.
New Deputy Honorary Consul in Windhoek
On the 21st of April 2016 Mr Reinhard Laggner was appointed by the President of the Republic of Austria Heinz Fischer to be the next Deputy Honorary Consul in Windhoek with authority in the Republic of Namibia.
Decoration Ceremony for HK Mosquito
On the 6th of June 2016 Ambassador Brigitte Öppinger-Walchshofer decorated the Honorary Consul in Luanda, António Mosquito, for 20 years of excellent service to the Republic of Austria. On this occasion – and in the presence of over hundred invited guests - the Ambassador thanked the Honorary Consul for having contributed to the promotion and interchange between the two countries.
