Alexander Van der Bellen will be sworn in as the next Federal President of the Republic of Austria on January 26, 2017. Van der Bellen won the re-run of the second round with 53.8%. He will serve as the ninth president of Austria’s Second Republic until 2023.

Invitation to panel discussion on the challenges and priorities for the Austrian OSCE Chairmanship 2017
The Austrian Embassy in London and Chatham House would like to invite you to an OSCE event at Chatham House (10 St James's Square, London SW1Y 4LE) on Wednesday, 14 December 2016, from 09.00 to 12.00.
Austria will take over the Chair of the OSCE in 2017.On this occasion, Chatham House is hosting a panel discussion on the challenges and priorities for the Austrian OSCE Chairmanship.

Dame Janet Ritterman awarded Decoration of Austrian Cross for Science and Art, 1st class on 15 November 2016
The Chancellor of Middlesex University London, Dame Janet Ritterman, received the Austrian Cross for Science and Art, 1st Class, one of the highest honours in Austria, for her significant contribution to science and the arts. The award was presented by Austria’s State Secretary for Science, Research and Economy, Dr Harald Mahrer at a ceremony in Vienna. Dame Janet’s contribution to the arts at universities in Austria as a founding member of the Austrian Science Council and her ongoing role at the Austrian Science Fund were especially recognized.
Austrian National Day reception on 26 October 2016
On the occasion of the Austrian National Day, Austrian Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger hosted a reception at the Embassy´s residence on 26 October 2016. Keynote speeches were held by Mrs Barbara Schwarz, Minister for Education, Social and Family Affairs in the Government of Lower Austria and by Alistair Harrison, Her Majesty's Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps. Austrian chocolate entrepreneur Josef Zotter, who was awarded gold, silver or bronze 15 times in total at the 2016 Academy of Chocolate Award in London, presented his new chocolate collection 2016/2017 at the Embassy premises.
Concert by Austrian pianist Ingolf Wunder on 25 October 2016
On the occasion of the Austrian National Day and as part of the Vienna Concert Series, Austrian Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger invited to a concert of Austrian pianist Ingolf Wunder at the Austrian Ambassador’s residence. Ingolf Wunder was born in Klagenfurt and he studied at conservatories in Klagenfurt and Linz before joining the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He achieved worldwide recognition at the 2010 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, winning Second Prize and several special awards including Best Prize for Concerto, Best Prize for Polonaise Fantasy and the audience award. Ingolf Wunder will perform at Southbank Centre in London on 19 November 2016.
150 Years Austrian Embassy on Belgrave Square - Austrian style ball and book launch
This year, the Austrian Embassy is celebrating 150 years of presence at 18 Belgrave Square. On this special occasion, the Embassy hosted a Gala event on 10 October 2016 – an Austrian style ball featuring opera singers and music by Johann Strauss – in the presence of HRH Princess Michael of Kent and Lord Mayor of Westminster, Steve Summers. On 11 October the jubilee publication “Celebrating 150 years of Austria’s Presence on Belgrave Square” was presented within a panel discussion by the author Prof. Otto Rauchbauer (University of Vienna) and Prof. Richard Bassett (University of Cambridge). The book was especially commissioned for the anniversary and compiles photographs, portraits of Ambassadors and facsimiles of original documents.
Jazz concert with Simone Kopmajer and Reinhardt Winkler
On 30 September 2016 as part of the Austrian Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger’s special concert series the Embassy presented a jazz concert featuring pianist and singer Simone Kopmajer and drummer Reinhardt Winkler. The audience enjoyed the selection of self-composed songs and the own and unique interpretation of jazz classics and applauded the performances enthusiastically.
Visit of Finance Minister Hans Jörg Schelling to London on 29 September 2016
On 29 September 2016 Finance Minister Hans Jörg Schelling and the President of the Austrian Central Bank Claus Raidl opened the conference “CEE Breakfast Panel Discussion 2016” in London, an event within the framework of 21st Austria. 21st Austria is an initiative established in 2011 for strengthening Austria’s global competitive position. Leading Austrian companies together with the Central Bank of Austria and the Vienna Stock Exchange represent 21st Austria. Afterwards, Finance Minister Schelling met his British counterpart Philip Hammond at 11, Downing Street in London. Schelling’s visit to the United Kingdom concluded with a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford Professor Louise Richardson and a speech to university students.

The history of the Embassy and the contents of the book will be presented in a panel discussion with author Prof. Otto Rauchbauer (University of Vienna) and Prof. Richard Bassett (University of Cambridge), moderated by Ambassador Martin Eichtinger. The book was especially commissioned for the anniversary and compiles photographs, portraits of Ambassadors and facsimiles of original documents. It therefore provides a unique illustration of the British-Austrian relationship over the last 150 years.

Visit of Salzburg's Mayor Heinz Schaden and Delegation to London from 15-16 September 2016
From 15 - 16 September 2016 Salzburg’s Mayor Dr. Heinz Schaden and a delegation of mayors of the Association of Cities and Towns of Salzburg met with the Lord Mayor of Westminster Steve Summers and other high-ranking representatives of the City of London’s district administration unit. On their visit’s agenda was an exchange of the latest initiatives and topics concerning urban policy. Furthermore, the delegation visited the monthly meeting of the Court of Common Council, the City of London’s primary decision-making assembly. The program of the visit also included a discussion about BREXIT with ORF-correspondent Bettina Prendergast in the residence of the Austrian Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger.
Defence Minister Doskozil visits London from 7-8 September 2016
From 7-8 September Defence Minister Doskozil attended the "UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial : London2016", a conference convened by British Defence Minister Michael Fallon. The program of the visit also included a working meeting with the Secretary of Defense RtHon Mike Penning, expert discussions with the Secretariat of the National Security Council and the British Ministry of Defence as well as a visit to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), an independent think tank dealing with issues of national and international safety.
First bilateral meeting between Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz and British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson in Vienna on 2 September 2016
On 2 September 20016 Foreign Minister Kurz and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson met for the first time in Vienna, where they discussed shared foreign policy issues including Ukraine, Turkey and concrete cooperation on migration and counter-Daesh. The ministers agreed that Austria and the UK face many joint challenges and that cooperation remains vital in dealing with them. With regard to the envisaged UK exit from the European Union, Foreign Minister Kurz stated “Our goal must be to keep a strong partnership between the EU and the UK, and strong relations between the UK and Austria.”
Foreign Secretary Johnson furthermore visited the counter-radicalisation NGO ‘Women Without Borders’, an NGO active in Austria and the UK which trains women to prevent and counter radicalisation in their communities.
BREXIT - Information for Austrian citizens in the UK
UK Referendum on 23 June 2016 on EU membership
There will be no changes to the status of Austrian and other EU citizens with residence in the UK as well as British citizens with residence in Austria, as long as the new modalities of the relationship between the EU and the UK, which have yet to be negotiated, enter into force. This process can only be triggered by the UK informing the European Council about its intention to leave the EU and will presumably take several years. Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the UK will not notify the European Council before October 2016.
